This Matai salad bowl was from a 300mm dia tree root cut from the stump of a previously felled tree in the Grey Valley, West Coast New Zealand. The stump was washed out of the river bank in one of the many floods this part of the country experiences.
Just so rich in color from what you would normally see from the Matai log, and very oily.
A rare find indeed.

Another not commonly known species grown in New Zealand. This was from a tree grown at Nelsons Garden Of The World complex, and felled in 2014 due to crown dieback. I green turned and boiled a number of bowls, these were dry enough to return three months later, and showed no signs of cracking and very little distortion.
This South American Beech is related to this countries Beech species, with this variety called Nothofagus Alpina. Like all our Beech species, just so lovely to turn, with such a richness is color and grain patterns.
Timber is used extensively in Chile & Argentina for furniture, flooring, wine barrels, joinery, etc.

Has a double vee incised cut, with texturing between these two burnt lines.

This species i turn green then soak in a special solution for one week, The outside and the rim have a wood sealer applied, then left to dry in a cool dark area, with the weight and date recorded on the side of the bowl every fortnight,
Generally takes about three months before you will see no difference between subsequent weighings, that is when it is dry enough to put back on the lathe and return.
The way the branches on this variety of the Araucaria genus all come out of the trunk in layers, shows you the really dark and extremely hard branch knots, and all the curly compression wood between surrounding knots
A unique bowl that would look nice as a feature piece, and bound to attract attention.

Finish is Danish oil & Woodoc wax.

This magnificent undercut bowl came from a very old tree felled in one of Nelsons historic homes in 1999. Tree had extensive dieback in the crown and when felled showed large areas of decay, in the trunk. The dark area you can see underneath is a void where there was a bark inclusion. The whole piece displays some beautiful compression ripple figure, and would make a lovely feature piece in any setting.

This bronze cage came from a large thrust bearing, with one of the 16 x 48mm diameter balls shown on the display mounting. Was essential to find a dark colored wood to get this contrast with the golden bronze, and think this piece of Walnut achieved that.
Bowl is separated by four 13mm long drilled Walnut spacers, through which pass stainless steel screws into bowl wall. Bowl projects about 8mm above and below bronze cage, with three small turned button feet in bowl base to give the piece a lift. Bowl was then Danish oiled, the both bowl and bronze cage spray lacquered
Polishing the bronze took many hours $500-00
