Western Red Cedar& Brass Clock Mounting 300mm dia x 85mm deep
This brass cage was from a large roller bearing, with one of the 19 rollers shown below. The collar around the front of the cage was originally held in place by riveted over stems that were all part of each roller division. These i drilled out to enable me to remove the 19 rollers, then replaced this collar with short sections of 5mm threaded rod, and brass dome nuts. Clock diameter is 150mm and fits into a piece of Western Red Cedar. Base plinth is N.Z. Red Beech, then sprayed with a black semi=gloss. The three spacers between wood and bronze are Brazilian Rosewood, through which pass counter sunk stainless steel screws
Think the piece shows a real contrast between the two very different elements of wood/metal, and having an engineering background, just love the mechanical look this piece has brought to my woodturning. Both this piece and the Walnut bowl inside another brass bearing cage featured in the English Woodturning Magazine. This piece took an age to polish, due to all the divisions to get in and out of.
Each part was individually lacquer sprayed before assembly
